Sheltering Pets
Supervisor Wasserman at Animal Services Center Groundbreaking
I was thrilled last week to launch construction of the County’s new Animal Services Center in San Martin! I have participated in many groundbreaking events for new libraries, parks, housing, health clinics, and other civic institutions, but – as a longtime advocate and animal lover whose family was blessed for many years by several rescue pets – this one was extra special to me. I am so proud that this Center will be a landmark facility and an inspiration for other animal care facilities across our state and country. This state-of-the-art Animal Services Center is scheduled to open in mid-2021 and will include an adoption area, animal holding and housing areas, spay and neuter clinic, veterinary medicine and support areas, administrative areas and a community multi-use center. The 37,000 square foot one-story building will also be a hub for South County activities, providing a much-needed community meeting space for up to 300 guests and will be available for public use. I believe that the new facility will enhance animal welfare and benefit our community as a whole. Watch a short video about the new center here.
Budgeting for the Future
Last month, my colleagues and I on the Board of Supervisors approved a budget that accommodates new projects including affordable housing and adding two hospitals to our system but also prepares us for inevitable economic downturn. We are seeing revenue growth slow while both the demand for County services and the cost of delivering those services is expected to increase. Funding threats are expected from the state and federal governments. One of the specific projects that I advocated for included money for agricultural preservation through the Santa Clara Valley Agricultural Plan to support our local farming community. I also sponsored one-time payments of $50,000 for the South Santa Clara Valley Memorial District Veterans Hall renovations and $75,000 for the YMCA of Silicon Valley’s Project Cornerstone to support anti-bullying and violence prevention in 72 schools.
CalFresh News
Farmers' markets are a great place to buy produce and fresh foods, and many Santa Clara County farmers' markets now accept CalFresh/EBT cards. Participants can get up to $10 in free fruits and veggies through the Market Match program when they use a CalFresh/EBT card at a participating farmers' market this summer – a win-win for families and for farmers. Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) is for people with low-income who meet federal income eligibility rules and want to add to their budget for healthy and nutritious food. The program is federally funded and administered by counties.
Day on the Lake
Supervisor Wasserman in Canoe at Day on the Lake
Last month I spent a beautiful morning at Vasona Lake County Park for "Day on the Lake!" Hosted by the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center and the Valley Medical Center Foundation, this event makes water-related activities more accessible and inclusive for persons with disabilities. Past and current patients of VMC’s outstanding Rehabilitation Center, their families, staff and members of the disabled community were in attendance. The day was a huge success thanks to all of the top-notch organizations who participated. Thank you all!

Community Announcements
Report illegal fireworks in Gilroy. The Gilroy Police Department has announced its partnership with "Nail 'Em," a free smartphone app that allows for real-time, instant communication with Gilroy PD officers who are assigned to work illegal fireworks enforcement. Citizens are encouraged to download this free app and use it to report illegal fireworks on July 4th, between 7:00 p.m. and midnight. The application will only be monitored during this time period. To report illegal fireworks outside of this time period please call the Gilroy Police Department Non-emergency number at 408-846-0350.

Report illegal fireworks in San Jose. San Jose's online reporting form serves to map where fireworks are being used and, with accurate information, may result in the issuance of citations to fireworks users. Using the form will not result in enforcement officers being immediately dispatched to the scene. It should not be used to report an emergency. Learn more here.

Weigh In on Voters Choice. The Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters (ROV) is encouraging residents to offer their thoughts and opinions on how the new ‘Voters Choice Act’ model of voting can better serve our diverse community. Visit the ROV website to join a committee or provide online feedback. ROV wants you to know you will no longer be able to cast a ballot at a traditional polling place, but instead will either vote by mail or at one of the Full-Service Vote Centers throughout the County.

Hey Garlic Lovers! The Gilroy Garlic Festival is just around the corner (the last weekend of July). We know and love it, but did you know that the festival is largely run by local volunteers? They earn money for their favorite local non-profits by working various shifts throughout the weekend event. To learn more about volunteer opportunities, visit the Garlic Festival Website or talk with your favorite local non-profit or school group.

I wish everyone a happy and safe 4th of July. Please visit my events calendar for some local listings of family-friendly celebrations. As always, you can reach my office at (408) 299-5010, or you can email me at district1@bos.sccgov.org.
