Animal Services Center Topping Off Ceremony
Mike signing beam at Animal Shelter Construction Site
November 22 was a beautiful day to attend the “Topping off” Ceremony for the new Santa Clara County Animal Shelter in San Martin - a monumental construction milestone. When I first set foot in the existing 70-year-old County Animal Shelter as a newly elected County Supervisor, I vowed then and there to help build a new and improved one. I am so proud that after years of planning, our new LEED Silver certified Animal Services Center is on track to open in 2021!

The 37,000 square foot facility will include:
  • Modern dog dorms that allow dogs indoor and outdoor access,
  • An open air outside park for dogs to interact with potential forever owners,
  • Free-roam cat condos with climbing structures,
  • A 10-stall barn and pasture,
  • Two surgical clinics to service our growing animal population, and
  • A community space that will accommodate up to 300 people at a time.

We must still raise funds to complete critical infrastructure inside this state-of-the-art facility, and I hope that you will consider supporting local animals with a tax-deductible financial contribution. If you are considering making a holiday donation – please keep this in mind! Donate online at www.aplace4animals.com or call 408-918-4643 to discuss strategic opportunities that match your wishes.

Serving Seniors
Mike at Los Gatos Lions Club for Thanksgiving Luncheon
Friends, food and fellowship – who could ask for more? Kudos to the Los Gatos Lions Club for providing and serving a delicious Thanksgiving Luncheon to 200 community seniors on the Saturday before Thanksgiving Day. A big thank you to the Lions and their Leos, as well as Los Gatos Meats, the Senior Commission, Mayor Jensen and volunteers, including students from Los Gatos High School and CT English Middle School for putting big smiles on many faces.
Census 2020 Jobs
Count Me In -- 20220 Census -- Everyone Counts -- County of Santa Clara
The U.S. Census Bureau is hiring individuals to help with their 2020 Census efforts. Various temporary positions are available starting in 2020 that pay from $24 - $42.50 / hour. The 2020 Census is constitutionally required to count everyone living in the United States. Our congressional representation is based on the Census, as are significant amounts of funding; nearly $2,000 per person each year in federal money comes into California based on census-derived data. In 2010, the Census Bureau undercounted every racial demographic except for Caucasians, and also undercounted other groups such as renters and young children. Be a part of the count for 2020. Volunteer opportunities will be available, too.
Holiday Giving
We all have different ways of giving back around the holidays. If you are looking for ways to give, I invite you to read about some of the families and groups on the Mercury News Wishbook giving website that are currently facing significant challenges in our community. I wish you and your families happiness, good health and prosperity for 2020.
